e-mails in reference to the weekly newsletter I send out to new writers. These e-mails meant a lot because I've been doing this newsletter since August and I've wondered if anyone has even read it.

A lot of times it's easy to become discouraged and give up on your writing because you can't see the immediate results. However, if you know you're writing to help solve people's problems and you know there is a need for what you write, keep on writing!

It will pay off in the end.

In fact, let me help you get started. Here's a writing prompt:

"The people who need to hear my writing are __________________________ because they need help in the area of ________________________."

This will help you to establish your target group and write what they want and/or need to read. If you are unsure of their needs, please do some research to find out. You can do it!

Why Ask Why?

Have you ever received a rejection letter from a publisher? Or have you had someone to give you a negative critique on one of your writing projects?

If you have, I'm sure you've asked "Why?" I can understand your need to ask this question, but let's face it: You probably will never know why someone said no to your writing. You could spend an entire day, week, or even year wondering why a publisher, editor, or fellow writer didn't like what you wrote. However, you can also spend that same energy perfecting your manuscript. What are some steps you can take to improve on your writing?

Put your current manuscript away for awhile.

Read a book on writing in an area where you would like to improve your skills - subjects may include: marketing, shaping your characters, writing a book proposal, etc.

After about two weeks, pick your manuscript back up.

Reread it with a fresh eye.

Make the changes.

Send it to other publishers

Start working on your next manuscript.

While you could waste your time wondering why someone said no, you can just as easily use that same time figuring out ways for your reader to say yes. Keep writing.

What If?

When you consider all the bad things that could happen to you in a day, it's enough to paralyze you from writing. You can solve these problems using the following strategies:

Keep a calendar nearby so you'll be aware of the deadlines for particular publishers.

Always spell check your manuscript before closing the document.

Hire a good editor to check if you meet the writing guidelines for the publisher you're submitting your manuscript to.

Buy and read books on writing good query letters and book proposals.

Find out the proper word count and adhere to these guidelines.

If you follow these steps and still receive rejection letters, you'll at least know you've done your best. In addition, you can keep sending your manuscript to other publishers until you receive that letter of acceptance. Whatever you do, don't give up!

The 4 Deadly Sins of the New Writer

Bright-eyed and bushy tailed, new writers come on the scene with a boat-load of enthusiasm and great ideas. They're ready to take on the world...and the publishing industry. I wonder if they know what they're getting themselves into.

While they start out with zest, however, somewhere along the line, many new writers fall into the pit of discouragement. They forget about the words they wanted to write in order to change the lives of their readers. The thought of writing to solve people's problems goes right out of the window.

Where did they go wrong? I believe they committed one of the 4 deadly sins of the new writer. If you're not careful writer, you could fall into the same pit. Below you'll find these 4 Deadly sins:

1) Procrastination.
Solution: Write something everyday

2) Allowing the discouraging words of others to stop you from writing.
Solution: Refuse to believe negative words and write a response to the comment that was made in your writing journal.

3) Allowing a few rejection letters to stop you from writing.
Solution: Work to improve the manuscript you sent off to the publisher(s) and send it to another publisher.

4) Allowing unexpected or traumatic circumstances to stop you from writing.
Solution: Write through your pain. You can even write about the experience. It's therapeutic!

While there are so many things that can prevent you from writing, you must be willing to press through your mess and write despite your hindrances. After all, life happens, but as a writer, you can respond to it through your pen and paper!

Do You Like Your Job?

Stress. If so, what are some things you like about your job that make it so great?

If you don't like your job, then what are you going to do to make a change through your writing?

If you don't know where to start, here are some points:
1) Don't quit your day job yet.
2) Write down 10-25 things you know about your job.
3) Consider how you can use your work experience to help someone else.
4) Write an article on some of the features your job can offer to those looking to get into the same career.
5) Go to www.ezinearticles.com and submit your article.

You never know who your job experience may help. I don’t know much about all the details since I’m a 70’s baby myself; however, I do remember a song from the movie soundtrack which began with the words, “Do You Know Where You’re Going To?”

Well, writer, I’ll ask you: Where are you going with your writing?

Do you want to write a book, an article, a blog, or what?

Regardless of what you want to write, you’ll need to do these five things:

Stop talking about it and start writing

Write at least 10 minutes per day everyday

Give your all every time you write

Set a deadline for your first writing project

Stick to it!

If you use these suggestions, you can and give your writing a sense of direction. How?

Start a new writing project. Of course you're working on something else, and I'm not telling you to put your current manuscript away, but I am telling you to write one additional thing to prepare for the next project. What can you do today to start the chain of events?

You can write one of the following:

Five writing goals

One page for your next novel

A web of phrases for your next article

Ten characteristics about a new character for your next novel

A letter to someone you love or someone who hurt you

Don't let this distract you from what you're currently doing. Just look at this brief exercise as a set up for your next project, and doing this should prevent you from ever experiencing writer's block again.

Now put this away for later and go back to your current project. Remember, it's always important to finish what you've started.

If you do this exercise once a quarter, you will always have something to write and you'll be able to write on a consistent basis.

5 Ways To Know If You're A True Writer

Do you ever wonder if you were really meant to be a writer? If this sounds like you, how can you know for sure if writing is a good fit for you?

Below, I have 5 ways to help you to determine whether you should stick with writing. You know you're a true writer if:

You find yourself jotting down new ideas on paper, napkins, your hand, or even furniture
(I suggest writing on something other than the furniture)

You write down the details in a meeting such as a work meeting or church function

You try hard to put the pen or pencil down, but you just can't

You become overly conscious of your spelling and grammar when you write

You find yourself writing when you should be working, cooking, or watching the kids

While some of these items are lighthearted and meant to make you chuckle, let's face it: A true writer actually writes! So if you call yourself a writer, do whatever you need to do in order to write and complete the work you've started.

Connect and Celebrate with Other Writers

You are not an island. Yes, I know the original quote is a little different, but writer, I'm talking specifically to you.

Many of us think we can get published on our own as long as we write a great manuscript, send it to the publisher, and get that letter of acceptance. However, for most people this is not the case. You need other writers and they need you. So you're afraid to meet new people-- but do it anyway.

Why is it so important for you to meet other writers?

You need someone to read your writing before you send it off to the publisher.

You need an honest, unbiased person to help you improve your writing

You'll need to learn and gain access to the changing trends in writing.

You need encouragement from other people who are in the same predicament as you, especially when times get tough.

Below you'll find some great ways to connect to other writers:

Attend writers conferences

Connect with a writer's group

Tell others that you are a writer and you may find a fellow writer as you're talking

Seek out other writers in your church, your social groups, among friends, and yes, even within your family

Even if you find one other writer, the two of you can strengthen each other along the publishing journey, and when you both get published, you can celebrate together!

The Writer's Cake

Growing up, I always remember adults making the statement, "You can't have your cake and eat it too." Who did this statement apply to?

I believe it referred to anyone who thought they could experience the good life without working hard for it. "The Good Life" -- fame, fortune, money, and yes, even a published book or article.

Writer, what are you waiting for? A sign? If so, here's the sign: JUST WRITE. If you were to talk to some of the best authors, at least most of them would tell you that they've had to make sacrifices.

Did they have their cake and eat it too? Is it even possible to do so?

I would say yes, if you're willing to put in the hard work and enjoy the benefits later.

Having your cake requires you do your part first by taking time to decide:

what you want to write (subject)

who you're writing to (target group)

why you want to write (purpose)

when you want to get published (goal), which may be subject to change

where you want your writing to go

sitting down to start writing

Eating your cake means:

reading the great reviews about your published work and hearing others talk positively about your published work

making money from your published work

gaining a sense of satisfaction from getting published

You are in charge of your writing destiny. You have the necessary ingredients it takes to make your cake through your talents, experience, and the resources around you. So to answer the age old question, yes, you can have your cake and eat it to!

We All Make Mistakes

I apologize for not blogging in awhile. I feel somewhat guilty because I've spent so much time in my blogs telling other writers about how they should keep the writing momentum going, and I allowed my blogging to fall by the wayside.

However, for now, I'm back. No, I won't waste time making excuses. I'll just say that blogging hasn't been a priority for the past month. I've taken on some other writing projects, but it's no excuse. For this reason, I've decided to blog 2-3 times per week as opposed to 5 times. This way, I can become more consistent and still touch the lives of new writers.

I still want to give you quality information and some bullet points to help you pursue your writing, but it won't be as often. In addition, I will be informing you about some other projects that I would like you to consider participating in.

If I had to say a few things to you I would say:

Be consistent with your writing, even if it's not every single day on the same project.

If you've slacked off, go ahead and start where you've stopped.

Figure out where you main priorities with writing lie.

Be honest with your writers.

Writers, I hope I've been honest with you and I hope you'll forgive me for not staying connected. What is the price paid for the glamorous life of an author?

On their part, the author has to:

Put in the time to write their best selling book

Create a marketing plan

Sacrifice sleep, family time, and other necessities in order to meet deadlines

Spend time promoting their books

Is this the type of life you want to live?

If you answered yes, then you need to count the cost. Even if it doesn't if you're committed to following through on your dreams and making the necessary sacrifices, you can one day see your name in print.

Expect The Unexpected!

Have you ever been disappointed in a person because they didn’t follow through on their promises to you? I have.

Many times when I would try to get my writing noticed by others. People made commitments to help me, look at my work, or accept my writing for their publication, but chose not to follow through. I became angry with these promise breakers and I struggled with forgiving them. In fact, I wanted to strangle them. However, my personal beliefs constrained me from going this far. Instead, I held a grudge for many months. This also was against my personal beliefs, but since it wouldn’t land me in jail, I decided to keep it.

Did holding grudges help my writing to take off in any way?

Absolutely not!

Eventually after I stopped feeling sorry for myself and being angry with other people, I decided how important it was for me not to put my ultimate trust in other people. I also learned an important lesson:
Expect the unexpected. As a writer, how could I do this?

Expect that:
People will often fail to follow through on their commitments to help you
People will say they’ll call you, but won’t
Editors and publishers may not contact you when they stated
Your computer may crash
You could misplace your manuscript or worse, your computer stick

While in most cases, you can’t change the unexpected, you can decide to overcome these obstacles. Realize that you’re not the first writer to experience these things and you can overcome them!

Tyler Perry or Bust!

Famous playwright, author, and writer, Tyler Perry inspires me greatly as a writer. I love his plays, his movies, and his sitcoms, Meet The Browns and The House of Payne.

Mr. Perry often shares his testimony of going from poverty to financial prosperity and fame. In it, he discusses the power of hope, forgiveness, and persistence. While I don’t want to do the exact type of writing as Tyler Perry, I do admire the things he has done to become successful at his writing.
Tyler has the:

Ability to write

Passion to write

Passion to meet people where they are and solve their problems through writing

Wisdom to use his past experiences to shape his writing projects

Power to overcome adverse situations

Tenacity and commitment to complete his writing projects

Maturity to ignore his haters

Boldness to accept and enjoy his success

If we all can follow these attributes, we will see our writing explode and touch the lives of our reading audiences nationwide and maybe across the world!

Watch Out!

Have you ever been hit by a hard ball? I have. I was in elementary school, playing softball with my classmates one day. All of a sudden, the ball him me right in the top of my head.

Why didn’t anybody warn me and say, “Tiffany, watch out!”? As I reminisce on that day, I’m not sure if one of my classmates warned me or not. If they did, I still got hit. I’m not sure how long it took for me to get back up, either. Because of this traumatic event, one thing’s for sure: I vowed never to play softball again.

Writer, I’m warning you: Don’t get hit by the twins of wasted time and procrastination. These siblings will hinder your writing. Maybe you’re struggling right now with one or the other as you read this entry. If so, you can get back up and move on with your writing.

You can pick up your pen right now and:

Write about how you feel

Write down three places you would like to visit

Write about your previous experiences, (your success, failures, happy and sad times)

Write down three groups of people you can help with your writing

While this may not be the information you planned to write once you get your writing groove back, it is a start. Maybe you don’t have enough time to clean your home. Maybe it’s a sickness, an unruly child, or a broken relationship. Whatever the case, you need a solution. Do you have a solution to your problem? Have you searched for one?

If not, I encourage you, to educate your way out of your problems if possible. Note however, not all problems can be solved this way. It may take time or you may need to learn something from your struggles.

As a writer, the best thing you can offer your readers is a solution to their problems. Many people will read and as long as you have passion for your readers and accurate information, you can help them to dig out of their pits of despair.

What kind of problems do people experience? In most cases, people want to:

Make more money

Save money

Save time

Avoid effort

Escape pain

If you can use your writing to do one or more of the above items, and influence your readers to take action, you will become viewed as an expert in your field and a good writer. Maybe you lost your wallet or had an argument with a loved one. Maybe your children won't stop crying and you're ready to run away from the house as fast as you can.

Take a deep breath and realize that we all experience bad days. However, we can't allow them to hinder us from completing the tasks we've planned for the day--especially writing.

At times when we're thrown off from our plans for the day, writing seems to be the first thing we neglect. We think it's not as important as paying a bill or making an important phone call, for instance. We reason that we have writer's block because we can't think clearly, but you can overcome your writer's block by writing down at least five things you are thankful for. It may take a few moments to do, but you can accomplish two things by doing this:
Get some writing done.
Gain a proper perspective of your situation by seeing the good in your life despite your bad day.

Go ahead, writer, take some time to show gratitude through your writing. If so, take some time for yourself, rethink your life, and set yourself free by making time and space to write!

It's possible, but you must take the first step.

Get Out of Your Funk!

Have you ever gone through a phase where you couldn't think clearly? You had a blah attitude about everything, (even the important things), and you felt like doing absolutely nothing? For instance, on some days, eating a pint of chocolate cookie dough ice cream seemed to be the most productive thing you did. I've been through this phase a few times in my life and I call it "The Funk"

During this phase you may not even feel like writing, but I beg to differ with you on this. You can write about your funk. How can you write at a time like this you ask? Below you'll find some topics you can write about while you're enduring this temporary phase:

Write about:

Your feelings and emotions - use adjectives and colorful words!

The things you see and hear

The foods you're tasting: describe how they look and taste

While you don't need to write a book about your funk, you can one day use some of these segments for future chapters or characters in a book, an article, or another writing project you'll eventually work on. Whatever you do, let this funk you're experiencing be a temporary situation so you can start writing again with a clear mind and live a life that includes more than eating a pint of ice cream to get you through the day.

One Size Doesn't Fit All!

Do you ever remember purchasing an outfit or an article of clothing labeled "One Size Fits All"?

You take the item home only to find out that you are not included in the "All." Maybe your arms are too long or maybe the robe is just a little too snug for you. It's disappointing to say the least.

What happens when you don't seem to fit the mold of the "typical writer"? Maybe you're not sure what direction to take, or maybe you're not apart of the writer's group everyone is raving about. To make things worse, you've just received a boatload of rejection letters for the manuscript you worked months to perfect. Because of these situations, you begin to question your ability to write and you wonder if you still need to write at all.

Wait! Before you close your laptop or retire that pen, understand that every writer has a different pathway. Take some time to ask yourself some questions, so you can reevaluate your situation.
Consider the following questions:

Is this the best time for you to write?

Are you writing in the proper genre?

Do you have a specific target group who needs to read what you're writing?

Are you passionate about what you're writing?

Do you need to start with smaller projects?

Have you had someone to edit your writing?

Now step back. It may take a few days to answer these questions about yourself. Once you've taken some time to answer these questions honestly, I'm sure you'll see the writer in you reemerging with a vengeance.

Just because one size doesn't fit all doesn't mean you can't keep searching until you find the right fit for your passion to write!

John & Kate Plus 8 -- Too Many?

The media is having a field day with the couple of the hit reality show, John and Kate Plus 8. According to various TV shows and magazines, the couple is having major marital problems, and the entire world is watching their lives unravel before our eyes.

In two words, I would say, "Too many." Of course I don't mean too many kids! People have had multiples for years and their marriages survived some of the toughest times. For John and Kate, too many eyes are watching them, too much exposure for the family, and too many people's opinions are being made about their lifestyle. These things can cause stress on the marriage and they threaten to tear a family apart.

Writer, do you have too much going on in your life? Are these things preventing you from writing effective information? Do you find it hard to complete your writing projects because of so many distractions?

What are some things you can and should eliminate in order to focus your mind, heart, and keyboard on getting back to the basics of writing? Below you'll find some things you can eliminate from your "hectic" schedule:

Watching reruns of your favorite show

Searching the Internet for hours on unnecessary information

Watching soap operas and reality shows

Taking long naps

Talking on the phone for long periods of time

While these things may be difficult to break away from, doing it can give you the exact time you need to refocus and get back on track with your writing!

The Matchmaker -- "Finding Mr. Right"

Boy meets girl. It's love at first sight. They get married, and live happily ever after.

How did this couple meet? At work, church, on the Internet, or through a mutual friend?

Whatever the case, their paths crossed, they hooked up, and it worked!

Don't you wish this were the case for you with your writing and the many editors, writers, and publishers with whom you've tried to hook up? Instead, you find yourself writing proposal after proposal explaining to someone who you don't even know, why they should publish your book. All this work, only to receive a rejection letter? What's missing? Why do some writers get chosen while you haven't? You try so hard to play it cool and keep yourself from becoming jealous, but you can't help but wonder why your manuscript isn't good enough.

While you may never know why your work wasn't accepted by some publishers, you can and will find "Mr. Right Publisher". Who is "Mr. Right Publisher"? He is one who will see the value of your writing. He will offer kind, but firm words of correction and ultimately help you to catapult your writing to another level without deceiving you.

Below are some suggestions to help you find "Mr. Right" publisher:

Research the publishers to see which ones will publish your genre of writing.

Buy and read books on how to create a good proposal.

Be patient.

Get another writer/editor who can recognize good (or bad) writing to edit your work.

Send your proposal to many publishers, (the ones who don't mind simultaneous submissions.)

Be patient. (This is not a mistake!)

Consider and research self-publishing as an option.

In due season, you will find the option that's best for you and your writing.

Can't Find Time To Write?

Consider your schedule. When we go to meetings such as writing conferences or workshops, we tend to feel more comfortable with people who look, act, and/or think like we do.

While it seems safer to gravitate to people who are familiar, rather than stepping out of our comfort zones, we can miss the opportunity to learn something new and valuable. In fact, you never know what a person can contribute to your writing until you take the time to talk with them.

What could happen if you try to reach out to someone who is different from you? Maybe you're shy or you fear rejection. But you'll never know until you try.

How can you reach out to people who are different from you?

Say hello and introduce yourself.

Smile.

Ask about their writing experiences.

Listen to what they have to see.

Search for commonalities.

When you reach out to others who are different from you, it may be a blessing in disguise because you may meet a new writing friend and learn something new!

Be On Time!

In 2008, when I began working at an office job, I made a conscious decision to work at being on time to work and any other appointments. This is significant for me because I had been in sales for over five years previous to this time. My sales job had me spoiled in that I never really had a set schedule, so there was no obligation to rush to be on time.

Now that I'm a full-time writer, I'm finding myself working harder to stay in a "schedule" mode, in order to complete my writing assignments.

Being on time, whether it's for work, a meeting, or even a family obligation, is vital. As writers, we have deadlines to meet. Whether we're working independently or doing an assignment for an editor or publisher, it behooves us to set goals and complete our assignments on time. Doing this demonstrates to others that we value a person's time and rules.

What can you do to be on time with your writing assignments?

Start writing once you find out about the assignment.

Create a schedule for completing the assignment.

Write something everyday.

Complete your assignment at least 2-3 days before the deadline.

It's important for us to be on time as we write because someone or some people are counting on us!

It's Over -- Lebron Lost!

Disappointment to say the least. Of course I was doubtful that Lebron James and the Cleveland Cavaliers would win both games during the Eastern Conference championship, but when they lost on Saturday night, it really hit me. Their chances of winning the 2009 NBA championship were over. Just think. All that hard work during these last 8-9 months: down the drain. Now the Lebron and Cleveland Cavaliers have to step into the unknown of the next NBA season and start all over again.

Starting all over again. Writer, you may be in a devastating situation. Your dreams and hopes of being published may have been crushed for whatever reason, but you can start over again. How?

Believe in yourself and your ability.
Write what you know.
Be consistent.
Refuse to allow your situation to stop you from pursuing your dreams.

Just because it feels like you're losing now doesn't mean you can't start again! As always, the Cavaliers start off strong in the first and second quarters, only to fall short in the last two. It happened again. They were ahead and then lost momentum in the third quarter.

In my mind I gave up, but...the Cavs pulled it off. They won the game 112-102! I was impressed, but now they're in a sticky situation. In order to win the Eastern conference championship and move on to the NBA championship, they must win the last two games. It's pressure to say the least.

You writer might find yourself in a sticky situation: You may think you lack the time, the skills, and the influence to write. But just like the Cavs, you've got to take it one step at a time. How?

1) Recognize your potential through your experiences and passion to write.
2) Write at least a paragraph a day.
3) Refuse to stop.
4) Don't listen to haters and naysayers.
5) Like Lebron, get the eye of the tiger!

While the Cavalier's victory to the Eastern Championship is not certain, you can make your writing destiny a surety if you possess the passion and the confidence to see your writing go to publication. I wrote one or two times a week because I couldn't understand the hype about "Blogging." Why? For one, I didn't think I could reach anyone by blogging and I didn't understand how interconnected I am with other bloggers.

However, I became more curious about blogging, so I did some research. I learned the following facts:

There are more bloggers out there than we think.
You can network through blogging in a very effective way.
You can pick us great tips on any subject just through blogging alone.
You can tailor your blog to fit your personality. (I'm still learning about that.)

Learning this information has motivated me so much that I've started writing more consistently and I've even started getting to know other bloggers by making comments on their blogs. Hey, you learn something new everyday.

Now I can truly call myself a blogger.

Once you read this, please comment on the beginnings of your blogging journey. And by the way, if you haven't already, go ahead and post your blog. You'll be glad you did!

Sincerely,
The Resource Writer

The Roller Coaster Ride: Lebron Lost Again?

On Friday night, I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Lebron James make that three point shot in the very last second of the game. His team won! A miracle. That's all I can say.

But when I checked the score for Sunday, I was dismayed to learn that Lebron and his Cavaliers lost by 10 points. I didn't watch the game so I don't know what happened, but this is a roller coaster of a series for Lebron James and his team.

Is your writing the same way: One day up and one day down? What can you do today to be more consistent with your writing?

You need to think about this. In order for you to get published: whether you're writing a book or an article, you've got to be consistent enough to finish it. If not, you'll never reach your audience. Believe me, if you've got something to say that's relevant and exciting, people will read. However, if you don't remain consistent and write daily, then you'll never know how many people will read what you have to write.

Whatever you do:

Keep writing

Get it edited

Reread it

Rewrite it

Let go of fear

Get published

Just take one step at a time, so you can reduce those ups and downs.

By the way, if the Cavs win the game tonight, they become one step closer to the championship. If they win two more games, then they'll become champions of the East. They just need to get off the roller coaster and be consistent. Sound familiar?

Let's Get It On!

One of my favorite love songs is by the late Marvin Gaye entitled, "Let's Get It On," because it's a song that speaks of action.

Action is important for anyone who wants to move forward in life. It's the only way you'll find success. Not only this, you can't expect anyone to take action for your situation except you.

Writer, it's time for you to take action and pursue your destiny. What's holding you back?
Is it:

Fear?

Your current circumstances?

Pain (emotional or physical)?

Sickness?

The death of a loved one?

While these things can sometimes set you back from pursuing your writing dreams, don't let them stop you from doing it. In fact, use your problems to write. Talk about them and find solutions through your writing. I can't believe it! For those of you who know about NBA basketball, this one's for you. If you're a writer, but don't know, hold tight. This message will still help you.

While I'm a Spurs fan, I really want to see Lebron James and his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers win the NBA championship this year. He's seems to be a good guy and he's an awesome player. Unfortunately Lebron got cramped up, although he still had a stellar performance. Nevertheless, his performance wasn't good enough to beat the opposing team, the Orlando Magic.

Despite his team's win, the Orlando Magic coach, Stan Van Gundy said of Lebron, "We don't know what to do with him." In other words, although Van Grundy's team won the first game, Lebron is still a force to be reckoned with. But if Lebron is such a good player, then why did his team lose the first game? When asked how his Orlando Magic team won the game, Van Grundy answered this question in one word, "Resilience."

Resilience is the ability to keep fighting regardless of the situation.

As a writer, this is what you need to see your work become published. You can't get cramped up and stop writing. You've got to keep fighting despite writer's block, despite rejection, and despite the changes that life brings. Your fight will eventually defeat your obstacles and you will come out victorious.

My hope for Lebron James is that he will take care of his cramps and win the game tonight!

Go Cavs!

Rush! In fact, I normally need to start getting ready about 3 hours before leaving my house.

My family members get upset with me when they see me running around the house trying to get things together; but I need time to think, organize, and effectively do...whatever.

As writers we may find ourselves rushing. With work, children, spouses, and unexpected events, we never seem to have time for anything else let alone write. BUT--how badly do you want to write and see your words published for your readers?

If your answer is, "It's not that important," then stop writing today. However, if you're serious about writing and getting published, then you need to make time in the middle of your rush, rush, rush.

How can you do this?

Write at least 1-2 paragraphs per day.

Eliminate non-essential activities from your daily schedule at least 3-5 times per week.

Establish one writing goal per month and complete it.

Despite all the things that require your time and energy, you can still make time--even if you have to rush, rush, rush! Although the media tries to downplay the value and benefits of marriage through soap operas, sitcoms, and movies, marriage does work. However, even when you marry the right person, the ups and downs of life can threaten to steal the love and romance from your relationship.

Writing is similar to marriage. You make a choice of what type of genre you want to write. You become excited and fall in love with your writing. As with marriage, you also find yourself committing your time and effort to it on a consistent basis. But eventually, your writing takes a pitfall. People become discouraging, you hit rejection city, sickness may come, or your schedule may become more hectic. You begin to lose motivation and the romance you once had with your writing begins to fade.

What happened? Will you ever restore your passion for writing or will you chuck your writing up as a hobby and push your well-crafted words under your bed to collect dust?

Wait! Before you completely shut your writing dreams away, pull yourself together and renew your passion and romance for writing. How?

Remind yourself of why you loved writing in the first place

Recommit yourself to writing

Write a recommitment statement for your writing, and include 3 writing goals

Recite it everyday

Take action and work on one of your goals by writing for at least 10-15 minutes everyday

While your love for writing will seem to fade, you can renew it by refocusing and writing again. Refuse to divorce your writing!

Shortcuts to Success

Imagine yourself running late for an important meeting. You're racing down the road when you stop at a screeching halt because of an oncoming train going across the railroad tracks. Like the driver before you did, you're tempted to drive across the tracks before the train comes; but you consider the consequences of trying to take the shortcut. To your dismay, the train along with its cargo takes about 10 minutes to complete it's trek.

Angry and frustrated, you start your car and proceed across the tracks to see the car that went across the tracks. You see a pool of ambulance workers, firefighters, and policemen trying to rescue the lives of the driver and his three passengers. They're trying to rescue one person with the jaws of life. Wow! What a tragedy.

Sometimes, we as writers become discouraged when we look at the success of other writers. We get intimidated and discouraged, so we take a shortcut to success. We wish we had the notoriety of Stephen King, Kendra Norman-Bellamy, or anyone else who we deem successful in the writing world. However, we don't know what these individuals endured in order to "make it."

Waiting can be hard, but it can save you from a lot of heartache and restarts. While waiting for your opportunity to shine as a writer is not the easiest thing, you can do some things during this time:

Read books on writing and marketing

Create a marketing plan for your book or other writing project(s)

Write book reviews

Keep a writing journal and jot down ideas for future projects

Your success will hinge on what you do as you wait. With this in mind, exercise your patience and enjoy your slow season because your "big break" will be here before you know it!

How Did Joan Rivers Win The Apprentice?

When Donald Trump announced comedienne, Joan Rivers as the celebrity apprentice, I knew he made the right choice.

Whether you like Joan or not, you must admit she's a winner in her own right. Beyond the face lifts and the tough exterior, Joan has won the hearts of many. As a businesswoman she can teach us as writers a lot about succeeding in the writing game.

At the age of 75, Joan was able to defeat her nemesis, poker player Annie by possessing the following traits:

Guts

Stamina

Being real

Knowing how to handle and get along with different personalities, including the Donald!

Joan's behavior in the apprentice can help us in the world of writing. Does Lebron James deserve the millions he rakes in for one basketball season or does Beyonce need to get the millions she receives just for singing and dancing, for example? I'll leave that answer up to you.

However, one thing I do know is whether on the court or on a stage of thousands, these people know what they are doing and they give it their best: They bring it!

You, writer, possess the gift to speak to your readers through crafting words. Of course getting started my be tough, but once you find your rhythm and flow with your pen or keyboard, you're good. And while you may not be on TV yet and you may never win an award for your accomplishments like Celine Dion or Brad Pitt, you can make a difference in the lives of your target group members -- those who will read and benefit from the words you write.

What can you do to bring it?
1) Have confidence in yourself and your writing
2) Look beyond the present frustrations of creating your writing project
3) Never give up
4) Enjoy writing
5) Set goals for yourself

Regardless of who reads your writing, it's important for you in every instance to bring it! It speaks about person who procrastinates in making a decision. However, refusing to make a decision today and putting it off until the next day can be a dangerous thing.

"Procrastination" Did you know that procrastination is one of the biggest stumblingblocks for writers. We try to say we don't have enough time or we don't know what to write. Maybe it's fear or a lack of passion, but as a writer I say: JUST WRITE. It may not be your best writing, but something is better than nothing.

You can do it, but you must hunger to see your words in print. If you're serious about wanting to write, then here are some great points for warding off procrastination:

1) Know when the best time is for you to write (morning, afternoon, evening).

2) Write consistently.

3) Create a web and write down some deas even if they don't make sense to you.

4) Edit later.

5) If you've written something, and you don't know what else to do with it, put it down for a week or two and start something else (You should go back to it, though).

It's important to write today because tomorrow may never come!

Sincerely,
The Resource Writer

Cherish The Gifts You Still Have

Last Sunday, I celebrated Mother's Day with my mother and 91 year old grandmother. This was a special day for me because just a few days ago I found out my mother was in the hospital. To say the least, this news devastated me, but what could I do being six hours away, but pray?

Yes, prayer does change things! The day after I arrived in town, my mother was being released from the hospital. This was one of my best Mother's Day not only because I'm a mother, but because I still have my mother with me. While we tend to view certain issues differently, my mother is a gift to me and I'm overjoyed that she's walking, talking, and still alive to share her testimony with others.

While we should cherish loved ones, we should also cherish our gift of writing. It's an ability that not all people possess, but it can change the way people think and ultimately live their lives.

How much do you cherish your ability to write?

If you really love writing, then you will spend time with it and you will sharpen your tools.

Take time today to write something meaningful and thank God for your ability to communicate valuable information to your readers.

Once you see the value in your writing, others will take note and cherish your gift as well.

Do You Really Need Some Quiet Time?

One thing I've always struggled with is the ability to sit still and do nothing. I've always had a preoccupation with keeping busy whether it's writing, talking, or reading a book. I needed to focus my mind on some type of activity. I'm not sure why. Maybe it started in childhood.

However, in the past year, I've learned the power of taking time to be quiet and do nothing. It's important for six reasons. Quiet time helps you to:

1) Focus and clear your mind

2) Think about the mistakes you've made

3) Find solutions to the problems you have

4) Figure out your next move

5) Assess the resources you already have

6) Generate ideas for your next writing project

When you set aside quiet time on a daily basis, there are no limits to what you can do or become. You will learn to make more calculated and effective choices so you can write in order to inspire your writers to a greater degree.

Take time and be quiet!

Yours truly,

The Resource Writer

Be True to Yourself

Dear Writer:

Yesterday I began my new business venture of marketing my writing services to physicians and medical organizations. Was I scared? Of course. While I was a pharmaceutical sales representative for over five years and was used to visiting doctor’s offices, it was different. Despite my apprehensions, I pursued my goal anyway.

In addition, I chose to remain true to who I was instead of trying to impress people in order to “land a contract”.

What does this mean for you as a writer? Many times you will be tempted to change your writing style or voice in order to meet people’s approval. While we always have to adjust to meet the needs of others and our situations, you should never try to remake yourself to the point of losing your “writing identity.”

How can you pursue your passion and purpose while staying true to yourself? Here are seven points:

1) Take some quiet time to evaluate your abilities, your experience, and the areas where your writing can benefit others.
2) Research the market and genres you want to pursue.
3) Create a plan on what to write and how to reach your target audience.
4) Write!
5) Be confident and unapologetic about your writing without harshly offending others.
6) Be open to learning.
7) Tell people the truth about your abilities or inabilities do a writing task.

You can achieve success if you remain true to yourself and be honest with others.

I welcome your comments.

Yours truly,
The Resource Writer

Accept Failure and Move On!

Dear Writer:

One thing we must realize is that life comes with failure. Many of us were raised to believe that we would always have success in everything we do. However, unless you're perfect, (which none of us is), we will experience some degree of failure.

As a writer, failure may come in the form of a rejection letter for that manuscript you knew would get you that book contract. Or failure may visit you in the form of broken promises from people you admire, but couldn't keep their word. Yes, failure is difficult to face, and you may find it hard to bounce back. But understand you can get back up again!

Despite your failure, you will survive. Below are a few steps to help you to overcome failure and come out victorious in your writing:

1) Understand that life is not always perfect and failure is inevitable.
2) Forgive the person(s), situations, or organizations that failed you.
3) Seek out other people and/or resources that can help you to reach your goal.
4) Refuse to become bitter.
5) Continue to write through the pain of failure.

Remember this: Your failure can help someone else if you deal with it, overcome it, and share it with someone else.

Go ahead, start writing, and encourage someone else to press on despite their failures.

Yours truly,
The Resource Writer

Dear Writer:

I congratulate you on your abilities to take words from your heart and transfer them onto paper in order to speak to your readers. However, I have a question for you. How far do you want to go with your writing?

Do you want to write strictly for satisfaction or do you want to leave your 9-5 job and pursue your dreams by writing professionally?

If you are brave enough to choose the latter, then here’s some advice for you if you want to create income through writing.

Steps to Writing Professionally:
1) Know your niche/area of expertise.
2) Purchase and read the books,
The Well-Fed Writer
The Well-Fed Writer: Back for Seconds.
3) Find an area of need that can use your writing.
4) Research websites, magazines, and e-zines where you can market and publish your writing.
5) Write down your ideas.
6) Do your first article.
7) Get a website and/or blog to showcase your writing.
8) Purchase business cards to define what you do.
9) Tell people what you do and give them a business card.
10) Ask people if they have or know someone who has a need for your writing.

Yes, it is possible to make income from your passion of writing. However, you need to have a plan and you need to know what direction you want your writing to carry you.

Feel free to post your comments!

Yours truly,
The Resource Writer

What Are You Afraid Of ?

This week I talked with some people about the field of writing. Two people of the people I spoke with write poetry. When I asked what they're doing with it, they replied, "Oh I have a folder full of poems..." That's all they said. As writer and editor, my first inclination is always to sell my services to them. But how many of you know that you can't sell a person who doesn't want to be sold?

For this reason, my question to you is not about purchasing a service for your writing. However, my questions are, "What are you doing with the poems, articles, or book you have written?" "Do you have it tucked away in your folder or dresser drawers?" "If so, what are you afraid of?"

Maybe it's the fear of rejection. Or maybe the fear of not finishing. Could it be the fear of having real success?

Whatever your fear, I plead with you to let it go and take the next step. Your next step may be to send your writing to an editor. Or it may be for you to educate yourself on writing through a book or through a class. Maybe you need another writer friend to read your information and critique it.

I know you can do it. Once you take this step, you'll be open to going a little further, and then you'll take the next step. Your fears will diminish as you keep stepping. You can do it because if you don't overcome your fears and get your writing out there, no one else will.

Sincerely,

The Resource Writer

Something is Better Than Nothing—Or Is It?

While you may not have a lot of money, one thing you do have is time. For your time is the most precious commodity you possess.

Everyday you begin your day with a clean slate. You start on the same playing level as every other writer. If this is the case, what makes the published writer different from you?

They use their time wisely.

One thing that helps me to get a lot accomplished with my writing is when I create a list of daily goals. My list includes my writing items, house chores, and any other things I need to do for the day.

You may ask, “What if I don’t accomplish all my writing goals?”

No problem. Just list it for the next day. Even if you do one writing task a day, something is better than nothing. Eventually those little “somethings” will add up to a finished writing project.

It's Monday: Your Day of Inspiration!

Dear Writer:

When I worked in the corporate world, I often asked my co-workers how they were doing. Their reply would be: “It’s Monday.”

“It’s Monday? Is that all you can say?" I thought to myself.

You of course, writer can say much more than that. Why? Because you have another day to put your thoughts on paper. Another day to breathe fresh air, observe the colors, the trees, and all the scenery that others cannot see or hear. Where am I going with this?

Everything you see, feel, hear, touch, and think, can be an inspiration for your next writing project. Wow! That’s a thought.

Anyway, my advice to you today is to:
1) Get yourself a journal and keep it with you.
2) Write down the things you see, hear, feel, touch, and any clever ideas that come to mind.
3) Look at Monday as your day of inspiration.
4) Start working on your next writing project and complete it.

When someone asks you how you are doing on a Monday, tell them you feel “Inspired”!

What Will You Do This Weekend?

Dear Writer:

It’s Friday and whether you're a stay-at-home mom, or a member of the corporate workforce, this is a day of celebration! Why? Because you get to take a break from the monotony of your five-day work week.

You have 48 hours to do something different than you’ve done for the past five days. As a writer, my question to you is: how are you going to spend those 48 hours? Will you write or will you think about writing and all the other things you need to do?

When you think about it, within one year you have almost 2,500 hours, (52 weekends), to work on your writing project.
